The Health Department refers to spraying as "West Nile spraying" yet 2 out of the 5 sites that had mosquitoes that tested positive for West Nile virus were never sprayed. To date, the Health Department has offered no response or explanation for this. Health Department official, Dr. Brent Hager's only response when shown this map and asked how they determined where to spray was, "I don't remember now."
Explanations of the markings:
Black stars with red circles= the locations where mosquitoes tested positive for WNV in 2004.
Black numbers with black circles = indicates
the week number the area was sprayed (out of four weeks)
Blue highlighed areas = odd weeks out of weeks 1-4
Orange highlighted areas = even weeks out of weeks 1-4
Pink highlighted areas = spraying was scheduled but canceled
(Bellevue was scheduled to be sprayed on 10/14/05 and was canceled. This does not appear on this map.)
All of the information on this map was provided by Dr. Brent Hager of the Health Department (MPHD) and the MPHD's website that lists locations that were sprayed. No Spray Nashville charted the info on this map. PROFESSIONALLY DESIGNED MAP (Download a pdf file of a professionally designed version of the map below. This pdf is 8 x 11.) Mosquitoes can and have been effectively controlled with less toxic measures. Eight counties in Metro Atlanta, Cincinnati, OH, Fort Worth, TX, Lyndhurst, OH and Washington, D.C. put a strong emphasis on source reduction, larvicide and public education and have no higher rates of West Nile virus than cities that spray.
